Oh bitter pi-rony

Bo Franklin

Pi Media, UCL’s official source of Sean Bean-related news and events, has hit choppy waters. After scrapping its news- paper last year, Pi Magazine is now report- edly having to delay its next issue. This is officially due to Pi ‘playing with the layout’, WordArt’s default Impact font apparently not going down well with readers. The Cheese Grater has learned that Pi is in fact struggling to find advertising revenue.

Given this lack of success, they are turn- ing to alternative revenue streams, attempt- ing to garner funds from advertorials. One society president reported that they had to haggle with Pi to get coverage, as the maga- zine originally demanded up to £600 to feature their society.

As if this were not enough, one of the editors has mooted plans to launch a new supplement called Pi Review. This would be sold with Bloomsbury Theatre pro- grammes at £2 a pop, though as yet it lacks the full support of the other editors. With Time Out recently becoming a free paper, it’s good to see that Pi will be filling the aching gap in the market for a paid- for arts supplement.
